Le présent nous renvoie donc au passé de la Méditerranée et de l&#8217;Europe. Il nous invite aussi à la comparaison avec d&#8217;autres sociétés, comme celles de l&#8217;Islam, de l&#8217;Inde, de la Chine ou de l&#8217;Amérique précolombienne. Plus près de nous, pourtant, le destin de nos villes a été marqué par des évolutions qui ont couvert la fin du Moyen Âge et l&#8217;époque moderne, soit les cinq ou six siècles qui ont précédé la révolution industrielle. C&#8217;est ce demi millénaire des origines &#8211; celui de la mise en place d&#8217;un premier ordre politique et économique, avec ses capitales, ses métropoles marchandes et ses réseaux commerciaux &#8211; que le livre analyse, à l&#8217;échelle de la Méditerranée, puis de l&#8217;Europe occidentale qui en a recueilli l&#8217;héritage. L&#8217;étranger y est omniprésent et pourtant difficile à saisir, souvent accepté, parfois chassé ou poursuivi, voire condamné comme tel. Même rejeté, il a contribué à modeler l&#8217;espace urbain et y a laissé ses traces. Elles constituent aujourd&#8217;hui les pistes préférées des historiens.</Text>
