<Text textformat="02" language="fre">&#60;p&#62;L'originalité de ce volume vient du fait que chaque site de la commune a reçu un numéro qui a été reporté sur un SIG de 11 pages (réalisé pour l'occasion par le professeur Pierre Nouvel de l&#8217;Université de Bourgogne-Franche-Comté qui a utilisé ce SIG pour une magistrale synthèse).&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
L&#8217;« amitié » du peuple romain explique en partie le rapide développement de Limonum sur le plateau au bord de la voie de Bordeaux à Tours : après la mise en place d&#8217;un plan orthogonal (qui pourrait être augustéen&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
avant d&#8217;être modifié plus tard), on construit alors le long d&#8217;une double rue nord-sud, longue de près de1200 m, une série de monuments publics. Si on a du mal à y identifier encore un sanctuaire impérial, un arc de&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
triomphe, on connaît mieux les rues avec des portiques commerçants, on soupçonne le forum. Cette longue perspective monumentale se termine aux deux extrémités de la ville par deux édifices dominant le Clain : au&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
nord, les grands thermes de Saint-Germain et au sud le plus grand amphithéâtre de l&#8217;Aquitaine construit sans doute à la fin du I er siècle. La ville est alors abondamment approvisionnée en eau par trois aqueducs qui arrivent par le sud. Cette « débauche architecturale » est due à l&#8217;évergétisme des grandes familles indigènes romanisées, à partir des richesses foncières accumulées sur le territoire picton. Dans les deux CAG Vienne (86-1/2) on a déjà souligné leur rôle « moteur » pour les grands sanctuaires ruraux.&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
Dès lors, le plateau de Lemonum, au Haut Empire, apparaît partagé en deux : à l&#8217;ouest de la perspective monumentale (nord-sud), l&#8217;habitat et l&#8217;artisanat du I er siècle ont laissé, eux aussi, la place à des bâtiments&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
publics (thermes, sanctuaires...). À l&#8217;est de cet axe, tout « le coude » fait par le Clain est occupé par un ensemble d&#8217;habitations et d&#8217;ateliers d&#8217;artisans que les fouilles archéologiques des quarante dernières années&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
ont permis de découvrir.&#60;br role="presentation" /&#62;
À partir du Bas-Empire, c&#8217;est cette moitié Est (celle de l&#8217;habitat) qui est entourée d&#8217;un rempart alors que l&#8217;autre (avec ses monuments) sera abandonnée. C&#8217;est dans cette moitié Est, protégée par les remparts, que se développera le christianisme, notamment avec le baptistère Saint-Jean.&#60;/p&#62;</Text>
