Réunissant près de trois cents participants provenant de dix-sept pays, il avait pour but de confronter les recherches et travaux menés dans la grotte de Lascaux depuis 2001 avec les expériences conduites dans les autres pays du monde sur la question de la conservation en milieu souterrain. Douze communications ont abordé des questions relevant de disciplines telles que l'hydrogéologie, la climatologie et la microbiologie en lien avec la protection et la mise en valeur des grottes ornées. Les exposés ont été suivis de débats donnant largement la parole aux experts et à l'ensemble des participants. Constituant les actes du symposium, ce volume regroupe les études présentées lors des séances ainsi que la transcription intégrale des débats. Il livre à la fois une synthèse des travaux de conservation réalisés à Lascaux entre 2001 et 2009, et un témoignage de l'état de la recherche et de l'état sanitaire de la grotte à cette dernière date. L'ouvrage est entièrement bilingue anglais-français. Le résumé scientifique de fin d'ouvrage est en français, anglais, espagnol, portugais, chinois, japonais. ABSTRACT Organized through the initiative of the Ministry of Culture and Communi-cation, the symposium "Lascaux and Preservation Issues in Subter-ranean Environments" was held in Paris on February 26 and 27, 2009 under the chairmanship of Jean Clottes. It brought together nearly three hundred participants from seventeen countries with the goal of confronting research and interventions conducted in Lascaux Cave since 2001 with the experiences gained in other countries in the domain of preservation in subterranean environments. Twelve presentations addressed questions related to disciplines such as hydrogeology, climatology and microbiology in relation to the protection and valorization of decorated caves. The talks were followed by debates allowing the experts and all other participants to freely express themselves. This volume, which constitutes the proceedings of this symposium, is composed of the studies presented during the sessions and full trans-criptions of the debates. It provides both a synthesis of the conservation activities realized at Lascaux between 2001 and 2009 and the state of research and the conditions of the cave as of 2009. Seventy-four specialists of fields as varied at biology, biochemistry, botany, hydrology, climatology, geology, fluid mechanics, archaeology, anthropology, restoration and conservation, from numerous countries (France, United States, Portugal, Spain, Japan, Australia, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand...) contributed to the realization of this exceptional publication. RESUMEN El simposio «Lascaux y la conservación del medio subterráneo», organizado por el Ministerio de Cultura y Comunicación de Francia, refleja el fuerte compromiso de la República Francesa con la protección de esta cueva declarada Patrimonio Mundial por la Unesco en 1979. La reunión tenía como objetivo explicar con la mayor claridad posible las investigaciones y los trabajos realizados en la cueva de Lascaux a partir de la crisis climática de 2001 y someterlos al examen de la comunidad internacional. Así mismo, pretendía cotejar los resultados de dichas investigaciones con los obtenidos en otros países y otros sitios o monumentos similares, junto a las soluciones allí adoptadas. Por tanto, se prestó especial atención a los debates entre los especialistas, que se transcriben íntegramente en la presente obra. La confrontación de enfoques aportará seguramente reglas para la gestión y la conservación de las cuevas con arte rupestre, tanto en lo relativo a las técnicas de conservación como a las normas éticas. RESUMO O simpósio "Lascaux e a conservação em meio subterrâneo", uma iniciativa do Ministério da Cultura e da Comunicação, atesta o compromisso firme do Estado na protecção deste bem, classificado como património mundial da Unesco em 1979. O evento tem como objectivo apresentar com a maior clareza as investigações e trabalhos realizados em Lascaux na sequência da crise climática de 2001 e submetê-los à perícia da comunidade internacional. Ambiciona também confrontar os resultados das investigações realizadas em Lascaux com os resultados obtidos noutros países em sítios ou monumentos aparentados e com as soluções que daí decorreram. Para tal, foi dedicado um grande espaço aos debates, transcritos in extenso, na sequência das apresentações.
